Midtown Police Station Project

District 1 HOAs/CAs have come together to form the District 1 Community Leadership group, and we are reaching out to other associations in Madison to gain support to have the Midtown Police Station project remain in the 2016 budget. This is something that effects not just those in the West District, but also the entire city.

We view this as an opportunity to give MPD the chance to fill in some much needed resources both in terms of a facility and hands. The project will increase the number of officers that will focus on items like: mental health, gangs, and neighborhood relations. This will allow them to be more proactive with the community then reactive.

The cost to the city for this is minimal (about $8.73 per resident) as the land and other items have already been purchased by the city (and previously budgeted), as well as compared to other projects like the $40-70 million for JDS. (Side note we do not have a public stance on JDS or any other item in the budget)

I am attaching a letter/w MPD fact sheet that we sent out to all of our members/residents. If possible, we ask that you send it out to your members as well (feel free to word craft if you want to put your name on it).

We also ask that you as a board take on this issue and hopefully support it by communicating to your Alder your support!

2015-2019 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)

The Draft 2015-2019 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the Madison Metropolitan Planning Area & Dane County is now available for review and public comment. The TIP lists major transportation improvements and studies anticipated to be undertaken during the next five-year period. It includes the scoring and priority project listings for the Surface Transportation Program (STP) – Urban funds allocated by the Madison Area Transportation Planning Board – An MPO. The draft 2015-2019 TIP is available on the MPO’s website at http://www.MadisonAreaMPO.org/.

A public hearing before the MPO Policy Board is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3 at 6:30 PM in the City-County Building, 210 MLK Jr. Blvd., Room 354. The MPO Board is expected to take action on the TIP at its Wednesday, October 1 meeting at 6:30 PM in the Madison Water Utility Bldg., 119 E. Olin Ave., Room A-B. MPO staff is also available to meet and answer questions, discuss projects, and take comments.

Written comments on the Draft TIP are requested by Friday, September 19. Please address written comments to the MPO office or email them to MPO staff at wschaefer@cityofmadison.com.

Hello Neighborhood Associations!

I have two events coming up and wanted to give you the information ahead of time.

The first event a presentation at Lafollette High School on 4/27 about what lays on the bottom of Madison's lakes.  Rick Krueger has spent more time on under the water than anyone, over 1000 dives.  He has great stories of what is down there!  See the flyer here for more information.

Second, we have an event that helps our youngest in the community to learn how to ride their bike.  Our unique technique teaches youngsters the "easy" way to learn how to ride a bike. This event will take place in Spring and Summer at Elvehjem, Olson, Falk, Mendota and Leopold Schools.  All welcome.  See the flyer here for details.

Madison Meet & Eat – EXTENDED INTO SEPTEMBER!

The City of Madison is pleased to announce that Madison Meet and Eat at Meadowood will continue into September. Due to popular demand, this unique neighborhood event that brings a collective of local Madison’s food cart vendors to a neighborhood and encourages friends and neighbors to enjoy a fun night out will take place four more times. This event will switch to every other week on Thursdays from 5-7:30pm. Upcoming dates include August 23 and September 6 and 20 th . The location for the 2012 Madison Meet & Eat events will remain the same just adjacent to the Meadowood Shopping Center at 5800 Raymond Road.

“I have truly enjoyed the time I have spent at Madison Meet and Eat over the past month,” said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. “The food has been awesome and it has been especially heartwarming to talk to so many residents who had asked to continue the program at Meadwood. I am pleased that we are able to do so.”

The plan for Madison Meet & Eat is to become an annual, summer event that rotates around to different locations in Madison and plans are under way for 2013. This will allow other neighborhoods to experience healthy, local affordable food and help foster a greater sense of community. Attendees are encouraged to bring family members, friends, and neighbors to this great event.

Bring a friend and head down to the Madison Meet & Eat some tasty, affordable, local food!

Dear Neighbors,

This coming Monday, July 16th we will be holding our annual Maple Prairie Neighborhood Association meeting. The meeting will be held at my home (2929 Maple View Dr.) from 7-9 pm. Please bring a folding/camp chair if you can as we will be sitting outside on our back patio. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will have a pleasantly cool evening. The MPNA will provide non-alcoholic cold beverages to keep us all hydrated.

The primary focus of our meeting will be to discuss neighborhood safety and the recent rash of burglaries that have plagued our area and the homes across PD. I"m hopeful that we can have a constructive discussion about how to create awareness of the problem and seek solutions.

If you have additional topics that you would like to discuss please come ready to share!!

Meeting Agenda:

• General overview of MPNA business - financials, membership drive, opportunities for volunteering, current officers and open positions.
• Madison and District updates presented by Alder Matt Phair: upcoming road projects, commercial/residential development within our area, crime etc.
• Open discussion of neighborhood quality of life issues: crime, noise, traffic, compliance with covenants etc.

July Openings Available for Interactive Safety Program

Help keep kids safe, sign up for ' Safety Town '!

Looking for a fun and educational summer experience for a kindergartener-to-be?

There are still openings available for kids to attend ' Safety Town ' this summer, a program offered by UW-Health American Family Children’s Hospital.

Safety Town is designed especially for children entering kindergarten in the fall to teach them about the many different aspects of safety and injury prevention. Hands-on activities are taught in a small-scale city, complete with streets, homes and sidewalks.

Topics include:

• Bicycle safety
• Electrical safety
• Animal safety
• Fire, playground, school bus and traffic safety
• Water safety
• Poison education
• Weather safety

Fire Truck Parade, October 3

Sunday, October 3 from 1:00 -3:00 pm over 40 Fire Trucks from Dane County area Fire Departments will parade up State Street. The parade begins at 1:00 pm at State and Lake Streets. The parade will proceed up State Street, finishing at the State Capitol. Children can meet the firefighters and sit on the fire trucks following the parade. Sponsored by Dane County Fire Chief’s Association and the City of Madison Fire Department.

MedDrop Event, Saturday, October 2

Saturday, October 2, is the date of the next MedDrop event. This is a free, drive-through service where you can bring medicine that has expired or is no longer needed. It will be conducted from 9am to 1pm at three locations: Middleton High School, Sennet Middle School in Madison, and the West Side Community Building in Sun Prairie. This is a safe way to keep unwanted medicines out of the environment and away from children and others who may accidentally take them or abuse them. Some of you have likely heard about Google's plan to install fiber optics and super high speed internet in a few mid-sized cities across the country. Madison is competing to be one of the test sites. You can learn more about Google fiber, and Madison's bid to be chosen for the project at the website below. NEW CITY OF MADISON SMOKE ALARM ORDINANCE

• By August 15, 2010, all owner-occupied single-family residences shall install smoke alarms that meet the criteria of this ordinance. The ordinance applies to all other residential structures on August 15, 2009. All residential buildings within the City of Madison, shall have smoke alarms in place which meet one of the following requirements:
• Hardwired smoke alarm with a battery backup
• Currently installed hardwired smoke alarms with no battery backup shall be allowed to remain in service until such time as the device must be replaced in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, no smoke alarm shall remain in service longer than ten years.
• Smoke alarm powered by a non-replaceable, non-removable battery capable of powering the smoke alarm for a minimum of ten years.
• All residential buildings within the City of Madison shall have smoke alarms installed in the following areas:
• In each bedroom
• In each sleeping area
• Within six feet of each door leading to a bedroom or sleeping area of each unit
• On each floor of the building
