Joel Kallman 1966 - 2021

Joel R. Kallman

We have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Oracle has lost an incredible leader, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

Joel's warmth and enthusiasm was infectious and he inspired countless others across the globe to be the best versions of themselves. He was the fire that sparked Oracle APEX and his tireless contributions since day zero make it what it is today. He leaves behind a community that only he could have built, and a spirit that will always be at the heart of APEX.

Joel has truly left the world a better place than it was when he arrived. We miss him dearly.

Memories

  • Joel will be sadly missed

Joel was always willing to help with any APEX or DB problems we had. He was a friendly face at a lot of the Oracle conferences I attended and our local APEX Meetup. Go Bucks Joel!

  • I didn't know him personally but he was always humble and kind in all the video sessions I've seen him in. APEX has been so important. He will be sorely missed. May his family and close friends take comfort in the words of Revelation 21:4 - And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes.....And death will be no more.

  • Service above self.

There are so many memories about Joel I have. Here is a picture I took during his session at Kscope18. A true leader never puts himself in the center.

  • Deeply sad

I know Joel as a newbie in APEX. He was always available and willing to help. My sincere condolences to his family.
It will be sad and frustrated not to have him in between us.
    My pray for you Joel.

  • Absolutely devastated

I’m in deep shock, Joel was such a lovely guy and I had the pleasure of meeting up with him in London on an oracle conference and we spent a great few days together. My deepest condolences to his family and friends, a real loss to the world 😢rip our friend ❤️

  • Joel always had a kind word, a smile, and the time to help whenever asked.

I will always be grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know him.

  • Rest thee well my MENTOR

So I remember when I started working a decade ago and became enthused by a tool I chanced on developing on the database. I reached out to Joel on LinkedIn and wanted him to be my mentor. He gladly obliged and wanted to know "How best can he help me" - that was so Joel. The rest I would say is history. He was the "APEX Crusader" always wearing a smile. He did me well, He did the community incredibly well. Rest Thee well Sir!

  • it is now on us

A rockstar I intended to meet is gone. Thank you for everything Joel! It is now on us to keep improving and promoting APEX and to keep the community spirits high.

To whoever steps in his position: godspeed

  • A gentle man with a fearless intellect

Joel and I joined Oracle at the same time, our paths didn't cross for a few years but when I had to work on an APEX application that needed some help he was first to volunteer and was so generous and patient with his time. Like many of my Oracle colleagues I didn't get to meet him in person until years later at one of our many shared Openworld's. Our paths cross in person many more times through the years and it was always a joy to bump into him on the demo-grounds every OOW. What a loss for his family.

  • Such terrible news

I'm so saddened to just now learn about Joel's passing. He was an amazing person who always answered the call to help others. He was not just an expert in his field, but was also a joy to work with. He was truly on his way to Making Oracle Cool Again (#MOCA). I will miss him greatly. I will keep Joel and the Kallman family in my prayers. May the Lord welcome Joel into His eternal kingdom and send all of us the graces we need to carry forward. Rest in peace.

  • I attended many of Joel's presentations at a number of Kscope conferences. He was an inspiration and got me pumped up and thinking of new ways to apply APEX at my company. Had a few drinks with him at Kscope 4 or 5 years ago. Just a regular guy to talk to but way more than regular. Oracle will be hard pressed to find someone to fill his shoes.

  • Cleveland, GLOC 2019.

Great conference, good conversations and discussions about htmldb history, about APEX future and development.
