Joel Kallman 1966 - 2021

Joel R. Kallman

We have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Oracle has lost an incredible leader, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

Joel's warmth and enthusiasm was infectious and he inspired countless others across the globe to be the best versions of themselves. He was the fire that sparked Oracle APEX and his tireless contributions since day zero make it what it is today. He leaves behind a community that only he could have built, and a spirit that will always be at the heart of APEX.

Joel has truly left the world a better place than it was when he arrived. We miss him dearly.

Memories

  • I am still trying to contemplate the news. It's just few weeks ago when I attended Joel's session in the Oracle ACE program. I have been reading/learning APEX since it was called HTMLDB and Joel's contribution to APEX and within APEX community is known world-wide. This is a void that will never be fulfilled. My heartfelt condolences to the family. May god give them strength to bear this loss.

Rest in peace Joel. You will be missed. Forever.

Just one of the finest of individuals that I came across. A truly amazing colleague, a great coach, always willing to help everyone who called upon him.

  • Source of Inspiration

He was always a source of inspiration. He'll be remembered as another name of Oracle APEX. It's a great loss.

  • Goodbye Governor.

I've know Joel since 2005. He has helped me both professionally and personally and always had a lending ear. In the video he mentions "Service Above Self". Well in 2015 he heard I couldn't get a hotel room during a conference we were both attending. Without hesitation, he let me stay with him on his sofa.

I last met him in Jan 2019 before the pandemic and we chatted about anything and everything.

Colleague, Friend, Mentor. Above all, A Great Human Being.

    RIP Joel.

  • Joel. An Incredible Person.

Delaying going home to your family, to visit my family when I was on extended sick leave. Crazy nights fuelled by Mojitos & Manhattans having the best fun. Having faith in me at work, encouraging me out of my comfort zone. Meetings where family & life always came before anything else. Passionate & dedicated about work, and life.

What's even more incredible (but not at all surprising), is that you have touched so many others' lives, in similar ways.

We will miss you, but we will always remember you.

  • APEX changed my life

In 2005 I was "lost". I found Oracle APEX and I returned to be a productivity developer. Your work, your effort, changed my life. Now I work on my own-shared company thanks to APEX technology.

  • I had the opportunity to meet Joel some years ago on an Oracle event and he was an extremely nice person. We used to exchange e-mails about APEX, IT and even his struggles learning to play Rocket League with his family. Joel also supported me a lot on the start of my career with calls in which he gave me tips and recommendations in my first job interviews. He was always accessible, and a genuine good person.

A great loss to the APEX community and to the world . My deepest condolences for his family.
