What are EF ratings?

The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale is a method used to rate tornadoes based on their intensity and estimated wind speeds, as well as related damage. The scale was developed by meteorologists and wind engineers at Texas Tech University and became operational in the United States on February 1, 2007. It replaced the original F Scale.

The EF Scale takes into account more variables than the F Scale, including 28 damage indicators (DIs) such as building type, structures, and trees. For each DI, there are 8 degrees of damage (DOD) ranging from the beginning of visible damage to complete destruction. The National Weather Service (NWS) sends a team to survey the damage immediately after a tornado, and it usually takes one to two days for them to have a preliminary rating. Only the NWS has the authority to provide official EF-scale ratings.
