About Features

Overview

Use the Features report to view database features introduced since Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2). Releases that include a feature are indicated by a green check box in the table and a tag under the feature name. You can filter by subareas, compare releases, and list new features. Deprecated features are indicated by a yellow triangle.

Filtering Sub Areas

The database feature set is divided into Focus Areas, each of which contains Sub Areas. You can filter by drilling down into various Focus and Sub Areas.

For example, to view all features pertaining to pluggable databases (PDBs):

1. In Focus Area, select Database Overall.

2. In Sub Area, select Pluggable Databases.

Drilling Down into a Feature

To drill down into a feature for more information, click the feature name. A modal box containing the following information appears:

  • Feature Description
  • Release Availability
  • Licensing Information is displayed in one of the following ways:
    • Licensed With: Use of the feature requires a license for an Oracle Database option. The name of the required option is listed, and the Available On field contains licensing information for that option. You can learn more about the option by querying it on the Licensing report.
    • Available On ALL OFFERINGS: There are no licensing requirements for the feature. You can use the feature on all offerings without obtaining any special licenses.
    • Parent Feature (where the parent feature name matches the feature name): The feature has its own licensing requirements. The Available On field contains licensing information for the feature. You can learn more about the feature by querying it on the Licensing report.
    • Parent Feature (where the parent feature name is different from the feature name): You can use the feature if you are licensed for its parent feature. The Available On field contains licensing information for the parent feature. You can learn more about the parent feature by querying it on the Licensing report.

Filtering and Comparing Releases

By default, the application shows all features introduced since Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2). You can filter on releases of interest to compare them.

For example, to compare all features in Oracle Database 18c and 19c:

1. In Focus Area, select All Focus Areas.

2. Under Version, select 18c and 19c.

The application now shows the cumulative features in Oracle Database 18c and 19c. A feature that was newly introduced in 19c has a gray X under 18c, and a green check under 19c. Features that were introduced in 18c or earlier have green checks under 18c and 19c. A deprecated feature has a yellow triangle under the release number.

Viewing New Features for a Release

You can view only the new features in a release.

For example, to view only Oracle Database 19c new features:

  1. In Focus Area, select All Focus Areas.
  2. Under Version, select 19c and New features only.

Using Search

You can use search to locate features by name or keyword. The search function returns the features that contain the query term in either the Feature Name, Feature Description, or Business Benefit. For example, a query of "multitenant" returns features that mention this term. You can also search on keywords, function names, and parameters. For example, a query of "DBMS_STATS" returns all features that mention this package.

Note that focus area, sub area, and release filtering apply to search. To search all features in all releases:

  1. In Sub Area, deselect all options.
  2. In Version, deselect all options.
  3. In Focus Area, select All Focus Areas.
  4. Enter your search term.

Deprecated and Desupported Feature Information

A deprecated feature is indicated by a yellow triangle under the release. A desupported feature is indicated by an X in a red circle under the release. To learn more about Oracle Database deprecated and desupported features, see Oracle Database Upgrade Guide.

Oracle Exadata Machine Features

This application does not show features introduced on Exadata system software. To learn more about Exadata features, refer to Oracle Exadata Machine System Overview.

About Licensing

Overview

Use the Licensing report to view Oracle Database features, options, and management packs, and their availability for each Oracle Database offering. A green check indicates that the feature, option, or pack is available for a particular offering; a gray X means that it is unavailable. You can use this application to compare availability across Oracle Database offerings. You can narrow the displayed information by filtering on offerings, license types (feature, option, or pack), and functional categories.

What are Features, Options, and Packs?

An Oracle Database feature provides specific database functionality. A feature can be a standalone feature, or it can be part of an Oracle Database option or an Oracle management pack.

  • Some standalone features are available on all Oracle Database offerings. These features are not listed in the Licensing report because they do not have specific licensing requirements. For example, table indexes are available in all Oracle Database offerings and are therefore not listed in the Licensing report.
  • Other standalone features are available with certain Oracle Database offerings, or on certain operating system or hardware platforms. For example, the online index rebuild feature is available only on certain Oracle Database offerings. Therefore, this feature is listed in the Licensing report along with its licensing requirements.
  • Yet other features are available as part of an Oracle Database option or an Oracle management pack. You must be licensed for an option or pack in order to use its features. For example, the Automatic Index Compression feature is available as part of the Oracle Advanced Compression option. Therefore, Automatic Index Compression is listed in the Licensing report along with its licensing requirements.

An Oracle Database option is a collection of features designed to enhance database capabilities in a specific area such as performance, security, or high availability. You must be licensed for an option in order to use any of its features. An option may be included in some Oracle Database offerings, offered as an extra cost option for some offerings, and not available for other offerings. All options are listed in the Licensing tab, along with their licensing requirements. When you click on an option in the Licensing tab, a modal box appears, which contains a list of the major features that are included with the option. The modal also has a View Related Features link, which navigates to the Features report and displays features (introduced since Oracle Database 11g) that are part of the option.

An Oracle management pack is a collection of features designed to enhance database manageability in a specific area such as cloud management, lifecycle management, or diagnostics management. You must be licensed for a pack in order to use any of its features. A pack may be included in some Oracle Database offerings, offered as an extra cost option for some offerings, and not available for other offerings. All packs are listed in the Licensing tab, along with their licensing requirements. The features in these packs are accessible through Oracle Enterprise Manager, Desktop Widgets, and APIs provided with Oracle Database software.

Filtering and Comparing Offerings

By default, the application displays licensing information for the following Oracle Database offerings:

  • Oracle Database Enterprise Edition (On-Premises)
  • Oracle Exadata Database Machine (On-Premises)
  • Oracle Database Cloud Service Enterprise Edition (Cloud)

You can use the check boxes under Offerings to add or remove offerings from the display.

See Oracle Database Licensing Information User Manual for detailed information about Oracle Database offerings.

Filtering License Types

By default, the application displays licensing information for all three license types: features, options, and management packs. You can use the check boxes under License Types to add or remove types from the display.

Filtering Functional Categories

By default, the application displays licensing information for all functional categories. You can use the check boxes under Functional Categories to add or remove categories from the display.

For example, to compare the availability of security-related Oracle Database options across all offerings:

1. Under Offerings, select all of the offerings.

2. Under License Types, select Option.

3. Under Functional Categories, select Security.

Drilling Down into a Feature, Option, or Pack

You can view additional licensing information by clicking on the name of a feature, option, or pack. A modal box appears, which lists availability across database offerings and additional licensing notes. Where applicable, a Related Enhancements link navigates to the Features tab, which displays additional features that you can use when you are licensed for the feature, option, or pack.

Using Search

You can use search to locate features, options, and packs by name or keyword. For example, a query of "cluster" returns features, options, and packs that mention this term.

Note that offering, license type, and functional category filtering apply to search. To search all features, options, and packs in all offerings:

Under Offerings, deselect all offerings.
Under License Types, deselect all license types.
Under Functional Categories, deselect all categories.
Enter your search term.

Scope of Data

Except where otherwise noted, the licensing information displayed by this application applies to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) and all subsequent releases.
